Donor Champion Program
Take action now
After you have been diagnosed with kidney or liver failure, you may feel overwhelmed or unsure of what you need to do next. While there are medical treatment options in some cases, chances are you’ve been told that a transplant is the best path forward and were placed on the transplant waiting list. While on this list, you may have to wait years for a deceased donor. This is why it is important to consider living donation as it will not only allow for your transplant to happen sooner, but allow you to have a better outcome.
What is the Donor Champion Program?
The Donor Champion Program will help you learn ways to find your living donor. The program is run entirely by living donors, living transplant recipients, and caregivers who want to share their experiences with you. During this program, you will learn skills to effectively tell your story and lessen your fear of asking for a living donor.
The Donor Champion Program was created through a 3-way partnership between the Northwestern Medicine Organ Transplant Center, Transplant Village, and the Living Kidney Donors Network. This program was developed with you in mind. We want to help you be an active part of your transplant journey. We have found that when people needing a transplant put forth the effort and drive the process, they can find a living donor.
How to find your donor
Imagine the possibilities of your donor finding you! This is what can happen when you share your story with enough people. The Donor Champion Program is a 90 minute session aimed to teach you how to find your donor. Anyone who wants to help you in your search for a living donor is invited to attend. This includes you, your family and friends.
This program will help you:
- Learn how to effectively tell your story
- Overcome the fear of asking for living donation
- Benefit from the successful transplant and donation experiences of the program team
